Will you marry me?
by Nick

I think that Amanda and I will both agree that July 11, 2009 will forever be one of the most important days of our lives.  Amanda thought that this day would be a big day in her life because it was the day that she bought her Ford Escape.  I had bigger ideas in mind.

I had been promising Amanda that I would take her out to our favorite restaurant, Sullivan's, after she gave up her Miss North Carolina title at the end of June. So....I decided to use that as a cover.  While she was shopping for her new car in Clinton, I was getting some of our friends together to help out with a scavenger hunt.  The plan was to have friends of ours at different places throughout campus that are important to our relationship, each holding a rose and a clue to the next location.

The night started with me suggesting that we go to Sullivan's in my car, instead of her new car.  I had to come up with a good excuse for this since the first rose and clue was hidden in the car. Needless to say, Amanda was a little confused as to why we were not taking her new car but did not fight me about it.

The dinner was great as usual, and everything was going smoothly until I got a call from Keith Gordon.  The conversation went something like this:

"Nick, it's Keith. Uh- Act like I'm talking to you about hanging out or something." He said this as if I was going to tell Amanda every word that he said! "We have a little problem. Bryce and Mary Leigh are not here yet and are in traffic around Greensboro. Can you stall some and I'll give you a call back when you're good to come back?"

Obviously, that was not the information that I wanted to hear.  I decided to slow down the entire meal process, which is completely opposite of how it had been going to that point.  At the end of the meal, I suggested that we go get dessert to kill more time.  Amanda, for the first time since we had been dating, said that she didn't really want anything  because she was so full.  I insisted that we go anyway, not knowing where to go to waste the most time possible.  To kill more time I told Amanda that we needed to stop at McDonald's so that I could use the restroom (don't ask me why I thought that was a good idea, but I thought it was at the time).  Fortunately, Keith called while I was at McDonald's giving me the all clear and that everything was ready to go.

Upon getting back in the vehicle, I told Amanda that I decided against getting dessert since she didn't want any and told her that I did have another surprise though.  I pulled out the pink rose with the note attached giving the clue.  The first location was The Agora, where Keith Gordon and Cathy Freeman were waiting with the next clue. The next location was Top of the Hill where Emily and Randall Packard were waiting. Keenan Music Building was next where Mary Leigh Lucas was there to send us to Person Hall where Bryce Creadon was waiting.  The final location was the Old Well where Lauren Winstead was.  It was at the Old Well that I asked the most important question of my life and got the answer that made me happiest I had ever been in my life.

After that, everyone went back to Amanda and Cathy's apartment where we all celebrated and Amanda's parents brought a cake.  I was, and still am, very appreciative of everyone who helped out to make that night special. I look forward to many more special memories with the most important woman in my life, the next big day to come..... our wedding day!
